I just bought a new anvil, a 117 lbs Peter Wright. Does anyone have any other information about that maker? : Blacksmith

I don't know much about anvils, but never quite seen one with this texture on the base before. The 126 had a crack from one corner of the hardy hole. They don't ring as loud and kill your hearing. They can be solid wrought, wrought with steel top, all cast steel, cast iron with a tool steel top, all cast iron, plus some others I'm sure. I just did a brake drum forge; but used a fairly small brake drum. The other Peter Wright came from a friend who got it from his dad.

Anvil names and makers, blacksmith, forge, mousehole, England, America, Sweden, book, history, industry and technology. Then welding it up with a mig gun running mild steel. At The Farmers' Museum I teach classes, present blacksmithing demonstrations daily, make historically accurate tools and hardware, and research life and work in the 19th century. It was compensation for what was inevitably going to happen. The only stories I've heard even remotely close to that is how they welded on new steel plates on top of a worn down anvil. It is marked England on one side and 77 kg on the other. This is something overlooked by crooks making forgeries of Peter Wright tools buyer beware. If no, enjoy some pictures of a pretty little anvil :- It's about 37 centimeters long. But I would gladly accept a nice Moushole over a rough Peter Wright any day! When it buries, we take out the screw plug nearest the top and put a big screw eye in its place for lifting. Are these anvils sought after. This is a multi-thousand year old trade and much of the information garnered from those times were lost during the industrial revolution. Postman, available from Centaur Forge, Amazon and elsewhere.

I am not a smith but I have owned a few anvils and buy and sell some. While bigger is better it is also nice to be able to move your tools when needed. Does anyone out there know who the manufacture of this anvil is? Actually, the feet arent really indicative of being modern. Try this nifty little tool from to find out how much it weighs in lbs. Both are fine anvils with a reasonable ring to them. Read before attempting any kind of forging. To me, the Fishers are the best. One side is straight, there is still a slight dip in the center and a selection of various radii along the sides. The only comparison I have is my own which is the one in the bottom of the picture. I'll cut the slots with a cutoff wheel on a die grinder, so I can just tack some sheetmetal tabs on the removed sections and use them to close the slots if I ever need to close them. Before I could try any more clay modifications, we got a few days of rain I don't have a hood and flue yet, so I work outside , then I suddenly had to redo some of the plumbing in my parents house I'm still trying to finish the plumbing in my house , then work picked up. Feel free to show off your latest creations or get advice on a problem, or anything else related to blacksmithing! For this reason, a good quality old anvil in reasonable shape is sought after. It is in very good condition with minor edge chipping, a little sway, the original finish and no signs of repair. I have repaired a few anvils by simply cleaning the damaged area very carefully. Record also sells some small anvils. Is that a shadow across the heel creating the illusion it's shorter? Is a Mousehole anvil a better find than a Peter Wright, or the other way around, or about equal? Well that's the end of this blacksmith's rant, have fun with your anvil and forging new parts for your old machines! I restored an old Parker combination vise that I picked up last summer.

For chiped edges, as long as you have some good edge somewhere, let the chips if not too severe be ground to different radius's. I collected anvils for a while- had 25 of them from 400 pound on down. The raised plate would allow me to make a firepot of some sort between the plate and the bottom of the drum. All these imperfections are useful in the forging process. If I cannot hold my hand there its time for a break. JoeE, Too bad you don't live closer. There are three square holes, maybe an inch and a half deep; two on the waist I've seen pictures of these being used to hold or hoist the anvil during manufacture and refacing , and one in the center of the base underneath - haven't figured out what it's for yet.

How was a thing like this cast? What other measurements would be helpful in confirming an identification or narrowing down the age? I can still swing a hammer for a bit. You don't need or want hardfacing or high nickle rods. From a technical standpoint, it was a good text the prof who wrote it was a retired aeronautical engineer , but reading it was a new form of torture. I would describe it as cast steel. We have discussed this before, but there is more than one way to lick a cat. The larger horn and long thin heel of the anvil face makes this a versatile tool. It would be interesting to see how hard the top is.
