Riding Impressions Earlier this year, I reviewed the 27. On the soft stuff sand they give you a chance to avoid washing out. Aired up to 22 psi R and 20 psi F , the casings measured 2. When other squared, blocky tires are rocked back and forth with hard out-of-the-saddle pedaling, a dragging feeling can be quite evident. Mounting them tubeless required a reservoir pump to encourage the beads to seal, but one try was all each tire needed.

While we didn't compare it to the same tire with a harder Pace Star compound, the performance we experienced was first rate. I used it as a front tire and within 3 rides the side knobs started separating from the carcass. On looser corners, such as those with a firm base covered in gravely rock, the drift was more apparent. Schwalbe — the bike tire specialist. Another major bonus is the new edge blocks are way chunkier and reinforced on the outer edge like the , so much better at resisting squirm and folding compared to the older Hans Dampf, which was prone to sudden grip loss when small edge blocks buckled. They hook up nice, and don't seem to be showing signs on wear, even after beating them up on the San Juan, Car Wreck and Rock It Trails. The tread also grips well on rocky slabs, root gnarls, and clears quickly and grips well in the mud too.

Since most of the rides here are up and down, I definitely noticed it on the climbs. Just goes to show you its all a matter of opinion. Had better luck with Trail Kings. Note that tubeless tyres do require a special rim with a lip for the bead of the tire to sit in, so ensure you have compatible rims. Different styles of riding as well as ground conditions both influence which tyres will be best for your personal set-up. Sidewall feels at least twice as thick. It has a square profile, providing a solid, consistent feel, while modified knobs on the shoulder and centre improve braking performance and traction on hard surfaces.

The new Schwalbe Hans Dampf in Test

I had the first gen Hans Dampf on a bike I bought and it was dreadful for my hometrails. As an avid mountain biker - and owner of - I recently set out to specifically test out one of the most talked about elements of a mountain bike - the tires. Their number one benefit being random edge knobs no longer rip off, and overall durability and lifespan is hugely improved. Then I went to Mallorca once, tried out another bike with them on and it really shone on those dry, loose, rocky trails there. Schwalbe's Jack-of-all-trades was not up to to the task.

Review: Schwalbe Hans Dampf II Tire

Best Applications Riding slick rock in Moab or Gooseberry Mesa? The zone where I do much of my testing is infamous for its sandy berms, and the big Schwalbe tires aced them while maintaining excellent exit speed. So anyone trying to sell you one tire as a be all and end all is, in my eyes, sadly mistaken. On pavement you can feel the soft, pencil eraser feeling of this tire. At first glance it may appear to be the same as its predecessor, but it is far from it. I did have some sketchiness in the sand but it was far better than the previous tires I had on my ride. After the summary table below, we discuss the key things to look out for when choosing tyres, followed by our detailed reviews. The front looks pretty good still but when that starts to show too much wear, I won't hesitate to replace that with another Hans Dampf either.

Snakeskin sidewall protection keeps you slithering along. These tires were tested on terrain around Boulder, Colorado and Park City, Utah. Now these dampfs seem to have the same side knobs, which has me wanting to stock up on some old ones, which I've been happy with on my clay based trails. Tire pressure becomes more critical as air volume increases, but less so as casings become stiffer. Nice riding tire, even off road. It has a smooth transition area when you lean into corners, and doesn't really lose much at any point in the tire contact patch.

Being that I was able to get both beads on the rim without tire levers or even much pressure I was a little concerned when I started the process. These tests indicate that the difference in rolling resistance between the TrailStar and PaceStar compounds is more than 60%. I used the same bike to review the new Hans Dampf, which provided me an opportunity to make direct comparisons on the trail. Schwalbe indicates there is only a half point out of 6 8% difference in rolling resistance between the TrailStar and PaceStar versions of this tire while my tests indicate a much bigger difference of 60%. Addix Speedgrip rubber: I have no idea what magic is going on inside of Schwalbe's Addix rubber, but the Speedgrip compound has to be one of the longest wearing substances ever used in a performance tire. Some riders may like this feel while others may prefer more edge bite. These blocks can only show off their strengths when the self-cleaning feature functions optimally.

Schwalbe Hans Dampf PaceStar Rolling Resistance Review

The Hans Dampf with faster PaceStar compound, on the other hand, is rated a 3. Our Top Pick Award winner surprised us in more than a few ways. The round profile smooths into hard packed corners on good dirt. Less experienced riders gained confidence from the predictable and forgiving feel that didn't punish a less aggressive style. Snakeskin is a conventional two-layer casing with an additional layer of nylon cloth to prevent tears and punctures.
