For Google Assistant, You Tube Music is, naturally, Deezer, Spotify and TuneIn Radio. As part of the Google system, however, you can use casting to play on your speaker, meaning you can send content from a range of sources directly to the speaker. It truly remains the smart speaker we've were waiting for. Pocket-lint If you don't have the Power Up base, the the Megablast will go into standby when it's not being used, like any normal Bluetooth speaker would. It offers adjustable bass and treble controls through the Sonos app and the One produces a mighty sound for its relatively small package.

Here is how the two speakers compare. This results in an excellent experience when it comes to listening to a news briefing or a radio station without much music, but you don't get as rich and detailed sound as you do with the Sonos One when it comes to music. As with the One, the power cable attaches to the bottom of the unit, which is a neat idea in every sense. Sonos Radio offers exclusive content, curated playlists and over 60,000 global radio stations for Sonos One and other Sonos speakers owners. It comes in a black or white finish so there are no snazzy fashion-conscious colours on offer, as there are with the Sonos One Hay Editions. Unlike the Sonos One, the Play:1 doesn't become a voice assistant, with Alexa or Google Assistant effectively becoming the Sonos controller instead, but it's a great feature addition to have for anyone with an Alexa-enabled device or Google Assistant-device that wants voice control for their Play:1.

SONOS One Review: The Best Smart Speaker

Pocket-lint The downside if you're an Android user is that you'll likely find your phone and the speaker will respond at the same time - especially if you have Google Assistant activate on your phone when it's locked. Verdict The Sonos One is a small but mighty little speaker. If you're desperate for Alexa when you're mobile then you can connect this speaker to a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone. Pocket-lint Of all the Bluetooth speakers out there, Ultimate Ears always manages to acquit itself well. The Sonos Sub isn't for everyone, nor will it be necessary for everyone, but it is a device that is all about sound and it's an excellent addition to the Sonos system if you can afford it. The Sub adds the extra dimension but what's most noticeable is that the other speakers combined with the Sub are able to concentrate on the mid and high range frequencies while the Sub concentrates on the lowest frequencies, and do a better job of it as a result.

The Sonos One doesn't disappoint. Pocket-lint Bear in mind that if you're setting up a Sub with a Playbar, Playbase or Beam, as well as a pair of the same Sonos speakers for a stereo pair i. By default this is set to 15 minutes, so if you stop the music, wander off and then come back a little later, you'll be shouting at a speaker that's turned off. The traditional way is through the Sonos app, available for smartphones, tablets and desktops, and it's a fantastic platform that is exceptionally easy to use. Your phone listens to how the speaker sounds in its environment, and tunes its sound accordingly. Naturally, there are more sophisticated speakers in the Citation range that will offer more - like the Citation 300, which moves to a stereo arrangement of drivers - but as a single point speaker the Citation One performs well across a range of audio types, not just music but talk radio and those other smart speaker functions too. The Megablast is a bigger speaker overall and more expensive.

The Amazon Echo also supports , allowing you to call and message other Amazon Echo or Echo Dot users. The Play:1 doesn't sound as good as the Play:3 or portable Sonos Move but the Play:1 is about getting the most out of your music streaming service without spending a fortune in doing so. Once setup is done, Sonos One Gen 2 streams and updates via your WiFi just like the original Sonos One. There are six microphones on board and the Sonos One also has noise cancellation to help with voice commands when in a busy room, as well as a feature called Arbitration that ensures only the closest smart speaker to you, whether a Sonos One or Amazon Echo, will respond to your command. It comes in a range of hilariously-named colours: Graphite black , Blizzard white , Blue Steel blue, of course , Merlot red , Mojito green and Lemonade yellow. The real story here is about how voice control is integrated — it is simply wonderfully executed.

Sonos One Review: Finally, a Smart Speaker That Sounds Great

It might be the only one with Siri as the virtual assistant at its core rather than Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, but if you don't want a HomePod there are myriad alternatives. At the same time, the Megablast falls into a crack: as a rugged and waterproof speaker it's built to withstand abuse and be used on the move, but without Wi-Fi when out and about in the great outdoors you'll lose that Alexa connection and skillset. Sonos speakers use a wireless mesh network and the experience is excellent with rarely any dropouts. Pocket-lint As with all Sonos devices, the Sub takes a minimalist approach when it comes to design. These are speakers that are designed to be used anywhere, any time. This is a speaker designed for music lovers, which gives it that edge over Amazon's own Echo or Google Home. It integrates with all the same smart home products, you can ask it about the weather, or just have it tell you stupid facts and jokes.
